Vermilion County received a check on Friday for $105000 from Invenergy Wind LLC to construct 104 wind turbines.

This is the second wind farm project to reach the application stage in Vermilion County. The Hoopeston Wind Project, owned by GDF SUEZ Energy North America Inc., was the first to file for an application to build a wind farm, filing earlier this year.

The Hoopeston Wind Project called for the construction of more than 40 wind turbines along a stretch reaching from around 3 miles east of Illinois Route 49 to the area near the Hubbard Trail Country Club north of Rossville.

Danville Area Community College and The Turbine Opportunity

More and more Turbines are going up in the fields of our area. If you go north of Danville a few miles into the more rural area you will see fields of turbines all in a row. It is pretty impressive to see one up close.

Community Bicycle Day May 21, 2011

The federally-funded Danville Area Transportation Study organization and the city of Danville are hosting a first-ever Community Bicycle Day on May 21, featuring a two-mile bike ride from the Danville municipal building at 17 W. Main St. to Lincoln Park. The route will follow Hazel Street north from city hall to English Street where bikers will turn west and eventually connect with Lincoln Park.

On English Street, bicyclists will be following the route of the future Lincoln Park path, a 10-foot-wide shared use path to be built in the next few years using grant dollars awarded to the city.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a United States holiday marking the birthdate of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., observed on the third Monday of January each year, around the time of King's birthday, January 15. It is one of three United States federal holidays to commemorate an individual person.

In 1968 after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., introduces legislation for federal holiday to commemorate King.

In 1973 ILLINOIS was the first state to adopt MLK Day as a state holiday.

Then in 1983 Congress passes, President Reagan signs, legislation creating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. But not until 1986 would the Federal MLK holiday go into effect.

The success of Martin Luther King's non-violent movement against segregation and injustice in the American south owes much to his visionary and inspirational eloquence. The following are excerpts from King's most popular speeches, according to the Martin Luther King, Jr., Paper Project at Stanford University.

If you will protest courageously, and yet with dignity and Christian love, when the history books are written in future generations, the historians will have to pause and say, "There lived a great people—a black people—who injected new meaning and dignity into the veins of civilization."

Up and Coming Talent Graces Danville Radio Waves

Taylor King has worked with the radio stations of WDNL-FM, WRHK-FM, and WDAN-AM in Danville, Illinois as well as internet radio stations. This 24 year young talent has the potential to be one of the greats. I can see him going far in his career. Taylor graduated from Parkland College in 2007 with an Associate's Degree, Majoring in Mass Communicatons: Radio-TV/Video.

Currently on-air talent for You can find him on air Weekday Nights, and Saturday Nights, on WDNL 102.1 FM Danville, Illinois.

Good Luck to Taylor in his future career. Danville is blessed to have him grace our radio air waves.

Taste of Home Magazine Comes to Danville

There was a "happening" in Danville, Illinois on Saturday night ! Taste of Home magazine brought their professional cooking school to the David Palmer Arena Culinary Specialist Karen Davis prepared several recipes which were projected onto a big screen for the large crowd to see. In addition there were vendors booths ranging from chiropractors, to food vendors,to grocery stores, to garden shops, and even a beer distributor providing samples of new beer products not yet introduced to the public and a new line of iced teas. There were lots of door prizes given away, everything from a 42' big screen tv to the dishes that Karen prepared. This was the second year for the school to come to Danville. It was sponsored by our own Commercial News. If you attended and want it back call the paper and tell them so. If you didn't attend you missed a big time show. The cost of the show was $9.00 and everyone received a bag of goodies valued at $50.00. All in all, it was a great evening and it proved that there ARE things to do in Danville. I'm looking forward to next year, you should to!
